Open Access
Open access can be described as access to scientific results, usually in the form of scientific publications and books, in line with the Berlin Declaration of 2003. Research findings are freely available not only for reading but also for re-use. Access should not be hindered by legal, technical or financial considerations.
Open access is implemented in two different ways:
Green Open Access
The green route is the deposit of a pre-review (pre-print) or post-review (post-print) version of an article in an open digital archive – a repository. The author publishes his/her article in the traditional way in a subscription-based journal. At the same time, the author also deposits the author’s version of the article in an open repository (so-called auto-archiving). Depending on the policy of the publisher and/or the VaVaI, this is done before, after or during publication.
Gold Open Access
The Gold Pathway is publishing in scientific peer-reviewed journals with immediate open access. Gold Open Access means that the publisher who produces the final published form of an article makes this final version freely available via the internet. However, to cover the cost of publishing the article, the publisher usually requires the author to pay an article processing charge.
The advantage of the Gold Open Access of open access is free online access to the scientific article immediately, i.e. at the time of publication.
